There are roughly 180 yachts available for crewed charter at a weekly rate under €500K in 2026, sized 35 to 55m LOA, on the Mediterranean, Caribbean, and Bahamas circuits. We rank 14. Weekly rates run €180K low season to €490K peak July to August. Plus VAT at 22 percent in EU waters, APA at 25 to 35 percent, and crew gratuity at 5 to 15 percent. A typical seven-day Mediterranean charter at the €450K peak rate runs an all-in full-check of roughly €730K to €820K.
The under-€500K market is the segment most people think they want until they see the all-in number. A €450K weekly headline is not a €450K charter. The honest expected total for a 12-guest peak Mediterranean week at the top of this band is €750K to €820K all-in. At the bottom of this band (€200K weekly), the same calculus produces €330K to €380K all-in. We will quote all-in totals throughout the rankings, not headline weekly rates, because the headline weekly rate is the marketing number, not the price.
How we ranked
We weight five things. First, value at the rate: how the yacht compares to the sister-hull pool and the comparable post-refit pool at the same headline. Second, captain and chief stew tenure (12 months on board is our minimum to count as settled). Third, charter season history: a yacht that ran 14 to 22 weeks in 2025 with three or fewer mid-season defects is the strongest operational signal we can read at this rate band. Fourth, cabin pattern at 8 to 12 guests (the under-€500K market splits cleanly into 8-guest and 10-to-12-guest sub-bands). Fifth, region depth: a Mediterranean yacht with a Caribbean winter base is more useful than a Mediterranean-only yacht for clients who want optionality. No. XII — The Greek islands pick: [VERIFY: 40 to 50m motor yacht with Greek registry and Greek charter licence, 10 to 12 guests, weekly rate €240K to €380K]
A Greek-licensed yacht for clients on a Cyclades, Ionian, or Sporades calendar. The licensing detail matters more than people think; a non-Greek-flagged yacht runs into cabotage issues that compress the available Greek itinerary. Charter rate runs [VERIFY: €240K to €290K] low season, [VERIFY: €290K to €380K] peak, plus Greek VAT at 13 percent (lower than the Italian or French 22 percent), APA at 30 percent.

What we passed on
Five sub-€500K yachts we did not rank.
[VERIFY: 50m motor yacht priced at €490K weekly with a 1998 mechanical platform and no refit since 2018]. The headline is on the band; the operational signal is not. The cleanest fix is to book the No. I post-refit pick at the same or lower rate.
[VERIFY: 45m yacht with three captains in 18 months]. Captain turnover above a one-per-year cadence on a sub-€500K yacht reads as a working condition issue. We would not book until the next captain has 12 months on the bridge.
[VERIFY: 40m motor yacht with a chef rated 2 of 5 on past-client references]. The chef is the single highest-impact role on a sub-€500K week with no spa, no dedicated wellness staff, and no on-shore chef rotation backup. Skip.
[VERIFY: 48m yacht marketed as charter but with a private-trip cancellation policy in the contract]. A non-protected charter contract on a sub-€500K booking is a flag. The clean fix is to insist on MYBA standard contract terms or walk.
[VERIFY: 50m yacht repositioning from the Caribbean to Med arriving June 1 with no shakedown week scheduled]. A repositioning yacht with no shakedown week before the first June charter is a high-defect-event probability. The clean fix is to book July onwards or skip.
How to think about the all-in under €500K
The under-€500K market is the segment where the all-in math matters most, because the VAT, APA, and gratuity add roughly 55 to 75 percent on top of the headline weekly. A €240K weekly EU charter with 22 percent VAT (€53K), 30 percent APA (€72K), 10 percent gratuity (€24K), and 5 percent extras (€12K) runs €401K all-in. The same weekly rate in Croatia at 13 percent VAT runs €380K all-in. The same weekly rate in the Caribbean at zero VAT runs €348K all-in. Region selection is a 10 to 15 percent lever on the total bill, and clients often overlook it.
The clean budget framing for this segment is: take the headline weekly, multiply by 1.65 for EU, 1.55 for Greece or Croatia, and 1.45 for the Caribbean. Use that number for board-of-couples conversations, not the broker's headline.
FAQ
Can I really charter a real superyacht for under €500K per week? Yes. The 40 to 50m segment offers 12-guest 6-cabin platforms with full crew, full toy spread, and recent refits at weekly rates from €240K to €490K. The all-in number lands €400K to €820K depending on rate and region.
What sizes does "under €500K" actually cover? 35 to 55m LOA at the headline weekly. Below 35m you are outside the crewed-superyacht definition. Above 55m the rate band starts above €500K with rare exceptions.
Is APA negotiable? Standard APA is 25 to 35 percent of the weekly rate. The percentage is generally non-negotiable; what is reconcilable at the end of the charter is the unspent balance. A 30 percent APA on a low-fuel itinerary (Croatian coast, short hops) often returns 15 to 20 percent of the APA at the end. A high-fuel itinerary (Sardinia to Ibiza one-week sprint) often uses the full APA and clients pay the overage.
Which region gives the best all-in value under €500K? Croatia and Greece at 13 percent VAT plus a strong charter inventory at the 40 to 50m line. The Caribbean at zero VAT in the off-peak winter windows (early December and mid-January through April) is the cleanest single value pocket on the market for clients with US flexibility.
When should I book? For peak Mediterranean July to August at 45m+, book by March 2026. For Croatia and Greece July to August, book by April 2026. For Caribbean December 20 to January 4 holiday window, book by October 2025; the rest of the Caribbean winter is bookable on 4 to 8 weeks.
