Sailo Review: A Smaller US Day-Charter Platform Verdict

Sailo lists roughly 10,000 boats, was founded in New York in 2014, and runs a smaller, narrower marketplace than the other US-skewed platforms. Inventory is concentrated on the US east coast and a useful catamaran niche through the US Virgin Islands, the Bahamas, and the Grenadines. Average total fee load runs about 22% over the headline rate. The platform has not raised meaningful new capital since 2019 and the engineering and ops investment shows. We have used Sailo for three bookings in 2026 and the platform delivered the day in all three cases. We would still open Boatsetter first for most US bookings.

Verdict: book with caveats. Sailo fits a narrow band of use cases. Bareboat term charters of 3 to 14 days on Caribbean catamarans, day charters in New York harbour and the Hamptons where the platform has long-tenure operator relationships, and a thin band of east-coast inventory in Annapolis, Newport, and the Florida Keys. For broader US day-charter work, Boatsetter is the deeper platform.

What Sailo actually does

Two-sided marketplace, similar in structural shape to Boatsetter and Click and Boat. Owners and operators list. Renters browse and book. The platform takes a cut, runs payment, provides a basic insurance wrap, and runs in-app messaging.

The category mix is slightly different from the other platforms. Roughly 35% of the Sailo book is multi-day bareboat term charter, which is a higher share than Boatsetter (closer to 12%) or Click and Boat (around 18%). Sailo's longer-tenure catamaran operator relationships in the Caribbean explain the mix. The single-day rental category, which is the bulk of Boatsetter and Click and Boat, runs lighter on Sailo.

Inventory and access

Sailo's strongest markets:

Market Approx listings 2026-04 Notes
New York harbour 280 Niche, long-tenure operators
Miami 720 Behind Boatsetter's 4,400
Annapolis 240 Adequate
Newport RI 180 Adequate
US Virgin Islands 220 Catamaran-heavy
British Virgin Islands 410 Catamaran-heavy
Bahamas (Nassau and Abacos) 290 Catamaran-heavy
Grenadines 160 Catamaran term charter

The Caribbean catamaran inventory is the standout. Sailo's operators in the BVI and the Grenadines include several long-tenure catamaran fleets that also list direct, but Sailo carries them at a comparable price with a meaningfully simpler booking flow than the operator websites. The catamaran term charter category is the only Sailo niche we recommend without caveat.

Outside the US and the Caribbean, the inventory is too thin to be a starting point. European listings are minimal. Asian and Pacific listings are not material.

Contract behaviour

Sailo ships a standard rental and term charter contract. The day-charter contract is light, around 5 pages. The bareboat term contract is closer to 12 pages and is the more important document. We have read both. The bareboat contract is clear on damage liability, weather discretion, and the captain handover process for skippered upgrades. The platform's leverage in a dispute is more variable than the larger platforms, and we have read two 2025 cases where the renter side did not prevail on a borderline weather cancellation.

Cancellation tiers are operator-set rather than platform-set on Sailo, which is a structural weakness. Two listings of the same boat class in the same market can carry very different cancellation rules. Read the listing's cancellation policy before you book. The platform does not normalise across operators.

Post-booking support

Support is US-hours, English-only. Response cadence is slower than Boatsetter and slower than Click and Boat, with a 2026-04 test response time of 36 hours on a manufactured cancellation. The in-app messaging works adequately. Captain handover for bareboat charters is handled directly with the operator. The platform's role is mostly the booking layer.

The Caribbean catamaran operator network is the support strength. The operators have been on the platform long enough that the booking handover is smooth, the boat is where the listing says it is, and the captain or skipper is who the listing says it is. The same is less reliably true for the long tail of US east-coast owner-operator listings.

Fees and total cost

Charge Who pays Amount
Service fee Renter 8 to 12% of day or week rate
Booking commission Operator 5 to 10% of rate
Captain fee Renter $200 to $450 per day where not included
Fuel Renter At cost on return for most listings
Cleaning fee Renter $40 to $200 where listed
Insurance wrap Renter Included in service fee

The renter service fee is the lowest of the marketplace tier in the US category. The all-in cost on a $2,000 day-rate boat with captain runs $2,500 to $2,900, comparable to Boatsetter and below the equivalent GetMyBoat listing in many markets. The lower fee load is the headline reason a price-sensitive renter would choose Sailo over Boatsetter, with the understanding that the inventory is thinner and the support tail is slower.

Captains and verification

Captain verification on Sailo runs against US Coast Guard records for licensed captains and against the operator's documentation for skippered bareboat upgrades. The standard sits behind Boatsetter, which integrates the USCG check directly into the platform UI. On Sailo the verification is more procedural than visible. Ask support for the captain's credentials before you book if it matters.

For the Caribbean catamaran operators, the captain and crew tenure is the better signal. The fleets we recommend on the platform run 3 to 8 year captain tenures, which is the right benchmark for the category.

Where Sailo wins

Caribbean catamaran term charter. Bareboat or skippered, 3 to 14 day windows, BVI, USVI, Bahamas, Grenadines. Sailo's operator network is the right one for this category, the booking flow is cleaner than direct, and the price is competitive with the operator's own website. For a couple or a small family looking at a week on a 14 to 17m catamaran in the BVI in February, Sailo is a sensible first stop.

The second category is the long-tenure New York harbour operator relationships. The platform has carried these operators since 2015, the boats are well-maintained, and the captain pool is stable. New York is a niche market and Sailo holds it.

Where Sailo falls short

Inventory depth across most US markets is meaningfully behind Boatsetter. The captain verification standard is procedural rather than UI-integrated. The cancellation rules are operator-set rather than normalised, which makes the platform harder to use as a default. The support response cadence is slower. The platform has not invested in product or operations on the cadence Boatsetter has, and the gap shows up in the booking flow and the support tail.

The single-day rental category outside New York, the Caribbean catamaran niche, and a thin band of east-coast inventory is not where Sailo is the right platform. For Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Key West, San Diego, and Cabo, Boatsetter is the correct first call.

Passed on

We passed on roughly half a dozen Sailo listings in our 2026 audit, mostly owner-operated single-day rentals on the US east coast with weaker captain ratings or borderline maintenance documentation. The platform's listing-removal policy is reactive, similar to Click and Boat, and the operator quality control is uneven outside the long-tenure Caribbean catamaran fleets.

We also passed on the platform's Mediterranean inventory entirely. The European listings are thin enough that the captain pool is not vetted on the same standard as the US side, and the alternative platforms (Click and Boat, SamBoat) carry the Med inventory at the right depth.

How Sailo compares

Against Boatsetter: Boatsetter wins comprehensively on US inventory depth, captain verification, insurance cover, and support speed. Sailo wins on lower headline fees and on the Caribbean catamaran term charter category. Boatsetter review.

Against GetMyBoat: GetMyBoat wins on inventory breadth and global presence. Sailo wins on the Caribbean catamaran niche and on cleaner New York harbour operator relationships. GetMyBoat review.

Against Click and Boat: minimal overlap. Click and Boat is Med-skewed, Sailo is US and Caribbean. Click and Boat review.

Against SamBoat: minimal overlap. SamBoat is Europe, Sailo is the Americas. SamBoat review.

Where Sailo sits in the For Kings stack

If you are at a hotel in New York, Newport, Annapolis, or the BVI, Sailo is a sensible platform to check, particularly for catamaran term charters. For most other US markets, open Boatsetter first. The catamaran category sits adjacent to the best catamarans for charter 2026 guide, which covers the larger, brokered yachts above the marketplace fit.

FAQ

Is Sailo legitimate? Yes. Sailo has been operating since 2014, runs a smaller but established marketplace, and has long-tenure operator relationships in the US east coast and the Caribbean catamaran category.

What does Sailo charge? The renter pays an 8 to 12% service fee on top of the day or week rate. The operator pays a 5 to 10% commission. Captain, fuel, and cleaning are billed separately per listing.

Does Sailo verify captains? Yes, against US Coast Guard records, but the verification is procedural rather than UI-integrated. Ask support for credentials before booking if it matters.

What is Sailo's cancellation policy? Operator-set rather than platform-normalised. Two listings of the same boat in the same market can carry different cancellation rules. Read the listing's policy before booking.

Is Sailo better than Boatsetter? Only for Caribbean catamaran term charter and certain New York harbour operator relationships. For broader US day-charter use cases, Boatsetter is the deeper platform.
